The impaler is functionally identical to the lurker with its ability to attack only while burrowed. However its attack is quite different, as the impaler is only able to launch a single tentacle to an enemy that does massive damage. It has 11 range, and deals 20 damage to a single target, 45 to armored.
How does a lurker work?
To attack, lurkers emit waves of super-dense spines against their enemies, having a full width of damage of ten meters. However, lurkers must actually burrow underground to release these subterranean attacks. Any warriors on the surface who are caught by these spines are instantly impaled.
How do you counter lurkers?
Here are some tips:
- don’t engage up ramps or in chokes.
- focus fire lurkers with immortals.
- pick up lurkers with phoenix.
- disruptors can siege them but it’s a slow process and you need a lot of disruptors.
- in general if you see lurkers you need to prep a sky transition or figure out a way to outright kill the zerg asap.

How do you beat lurkers as Zerg?
Really the best way to break a zerg who goes lurkers is to go vipers (around 5-6 maybe more if they go BL) and just start abducting all of the opponents lurkers. Your entire goal at that point is to really keep your army mobile, secure the chokes and start expanding like crazy so that you always have a 200/200 army.

Is the impaller or the Impaler more useful?
Neither is very useful, although I found the impaler to be decent once in a while just for having 11 range. And with that… pow! I’m gone! I have to agree with funkyfritter, haven’t really found either all that useful, but between the two I’ve preferred the impaller, kind of like a cloaked siege tank with out the splash.

The lurker is an evolution of the hydralisk. They are able to attack multiple targets while burrowed. The lurkers were created from hydralisks during the Brood War. After the conflict was over, the lurkers were lost. However, years later Abathur discovered that there were feral lurkers on the surface of Cavir, survivors of Daggoth’s Renegade Swarm.
What is the lurker’s weakness?
The only weakness of the Lurker is that it is virtually defenseless while above ground. Once underground, a Lurker can utilize a series of spines that rip up through the ground in a straight line from the Lurker to its target.
