Does it matter if you strum up or down?
Most people have the pick angled downward towards the floor when they strum. Some people have the pick angle more parallel to the strings, and some people, angle the pick upward. It really doesn’t matter.

What does A strum down mean?
A downstroke (indicated with an open-bottomed box, shown in the following figures) is played with a downward motion of the pick, toward the floor — the way you naturally strike a guitar. You can strum multiple strings or pick an individual string with a downstroke.
How do you do Upstrums?
Strum your guitar on muted strings. Hit all the strings on your way down, then all strings on your way up. Keep your hand steady, and move your strumming hand to the beat. During the up strum, you’ll want to pull slightly away from your guitar.
What is 16th strumming?
Having a down strum on the beat and on the off beat means there must be an up in between each, so there are now two more divisions of the beat – giving as a total of 16 possible strums in a bar (hence 16th note strumming!).

Why is my pick so loud?
First, sound is perceived when things bump around in your ear, which is generally caused by air bumping around. Moving your pick through the air therefore causes sound, and striking the strings is amplified by the guitar, creating even more sound. Thus, pick sounds are unavoidable.
Do most guitar players use a pick?
Although there are always exceptions. Guitar players like Mark Knopfler, Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwoodmac) and Jeff Beck (after years of using the pick) are popular guitar players and excellent exponents of fingerstyle rock guitar. That being said, most electric guitar players use the guitar pick.
