The Magic Mile is a running test developed by Jeff Galloway that involves running 1 mile at at high intensity – though not ‘all out’. It measures your current fitness level, predicts race times, and provides a specific long-run training pace.
How does the magic mile work?
The Galloway program uses a formula based upon a one mile time trial to predict what pace you could run at longer distances (assuming appropriate training, reasonable temperatures, and appropriate walk break ratio). This mile is run at a good, hard pace, and can be done approximately every 2 weeks.
What should my run walk ratio be?
A minimum suggestion for first time marathoners would be one minute of walking for every 3-4 minutes of running. Here are my recommended ratios of running and walking, based upon your pace per mile. Remember that long runs should be run at least 2 min/mi slower than your projected finish pace in the marathon.
