What is SG material?
What is SG material?
SG Iron is also known as Ductile Cast Iron, Nodular Cast Iron, Spheroidal Graphite Iron and Spherulitic Cast Iron. This grade of Iron was developed over 60 years ago and in the USA.
What type of metal is SG?
It is a type of cast iron known for its impact, fatigue resistance, elongation and wear resistance due to the spherical graphite structures within the metal, as opposed to the flake structure which can be seen in Grey Iron. The picture below shows the spherical graphite structures of SG Iron.
What is hardness in SG Iron?
S.G. iron, predominantly ferritic (partly pearlitic) if stress-relieved earlier then the water-quenching after the surface-hardening results in hardness of 50-55 HRC whereas, self-quenching results in 40-45 HRC. A fully-ferritic S.G. iron responds imperfectly as martensite is formed only around the graphite nodules.
What is Gjs material?
Cast iron with spheroidal graphite (EN-GJS) is, according to German Standard (DIN) EN 1563, an iron-carbon cast material; its carbon content is almost entirely present in the form of largely spherical “chunks” embedded in the structural iron matrix.
Is SG an iron standard?
S G Iron / Ductile Iron Chemical Components Ductile iron is also called as nodular iron or SG iron. Its chemical components did not have strict range for many material standards, however, its range should be useful for buyers to evaluate the quality of cast iron.

Can SG Iron be welded?
Weldability of spheroidal graphite ductile cast iron was established using a cheap Ni-Fe and a high purity Ni electrode. A preheating treatment at 350 °C and an annealing treatment at 850 °C were carried out to improve mechanical properties of welded pieces.
What is the chemical composition of SG iron?
Carbon 3.2 to 3.6% Silicon 2.2 to 2.8% Manganese 0.1 to 0.5% Magnesium 0.03 to 0.05%
What is the meaning of cast iron SG 400 15?
According to Indian standard specifications, SG 400/15 means Spheroidal graphite cast iron with minimum tensile strength 400 MPa and 15 percent elongation.
What is the difference between SG iron and cast iron?
The difference between traditional cast iron and modern-day ductile iron is the shape of the graphite. While cast iron has small flakes of graphite, ductile iron contains spherical graphite nodules. Because of the spherical shape of the graphite, ductile iron is often called spheroidal iron or nodular cast iron.
What are the three properties of pig iron?
Properties of pig iron Pig iron is hard, wear resistant, fairly fusible and very brittle. It is not useful directly as a material except for limited applications. It has a low melting point as compared to steel.
What is the difference between pig iron and sponge iron?
Sponge iron is a form of iron that we can produce directly from iron ore through a reduction process whereas pig iron is a form of iron that we can produce by melting iron ore along with charcoal and limestone under very high pressure.
What does SG mean on a ring?
Silver jewellery Sterling silver is a metal containing at least 92.5% silver. This is the legal standard of purity set by the assay offices in Britain and used for most silver jewellery throughout the world. It means that the metal used is of a specific quality.
What is SG of silver?
10.5 gr/cm^3
Pure silver has a specific gravity of 10.5 gr/cm^3.
How is SG iron made?
To make S.G. Iron, mild steel scrap, Fe-Si, Coke etc. is melted in induction furnace. Once the melt is ready, it is inoculated with small addition of Magnesium or Chromium available in Ferro blends. The metal is then poured into moulds, cooled and fettled.
What are the properties of ductile iron?
Ductile iron is distinguished from ordinary grey iron by its remarkable mechanical properties (elasticity, impact strength, elongation…). These are due to the spheroidal nature of the graphite particles….Ductile iron properties
- tensile strength,
- impact resistance,
- high elastic limit,
- good elongation.
What are the three raw materials in making of pig iron?
The three main raw materials used to make pig iron (which is the raw material needed to make steel) for primary steel production in a blast furnace are the processed iron ore, coke (residue left after heating coal in the absence of air, generally containing up to 90% carbon) and limestone (CaCO3) or burnt lime (CaO).
