Can you get Youth Allowance over 22?
If you want to claim as independent because you’re turning 22, you can submit your claim up to 13 weeks before your birthday. If you claim early, you can be considered independent as soon as you turn 22. Before you start, check if you’re eligible for Youth Allowance for students and apprentices.
Does Youth Allowance get the $250?
If you’re eligible, we’ll pay you the $250 one-off payment automatically. We’ll pay it into the same bank account as we pay your eligible income support payment. We’ll send a letter to let you know we’ve made the payment. You only get one payment even if you have both an eligible payment and concession card.

You must be either studying full time or doing a full time Australian Apprenticeship. Austudy is financial help if you’re 25 or older and studying or completing an Australian Apprenticeship.
Can I get Youth Allowance if I live with my parents?
Young people under the age of 22 can access the full rate of Youth Allowance if they are independent from their parents. However, if they’re still dependent, then a parental income test applies. The threshold for that is $54,677. You lose 20 cents for every dollar above that threshold that your parents earn.

When you become 22 years old you are automatically considered as ‘independent’ for Independent Youth Allowance purposes. If you are 25 years of age, and starting a new course, you can apply for Austudy.
