Do you go under general anesthesia for a port placement?
No. The port placement procedure is a minimally invasive procedure. You will only receive local anesthesia with some sedation and pain control medication if you need it during the procedure.
What anesthesia is used for port placement?
The procedure is usually done under conscious sedation. Ultrasound is used to find the needle puncture site for the appropriate vein, and a wire is placed through the needle into the large central vein.

Do not eat anything for 6 hours prior to the procedure. You may enjoy clear liquids such as clear juices or black coffee up until 4 hours before the port insertion. Wear comfortable clothing and a top that is easy to take off. For women, wear the type of bra that you normally wear.

A central line placement is performed in an X-ray room by a radiologist and specially trained nurses and technologists. The radiologist will place a small tube in the vein under your shoulder bone and anchor it by making a small tunnel under your skin.

This depends on the type of work you do, why you have the catheter, and how you feel. Once your incision is fully healed, you probably will be able to take baths and swim. But you may need to avoid some activities if a Huber needle is left in the port. Talk to your doctor about any limits on your activity.

It will take about 10 to 14 days for you to heal after the port is placed. But, after that time, having the port will not restrict your activities at all. How are ports used?
