In 1851, Iowa divided itself into 51 counties. Bancroft County was located north of Kossuth County and extended to the Minnesota State Line. As time went on, Iowa’s legislature continued to divide the state until it had 100 counties – including Bancroft.
Why is Kossuth County so big?
In 1855, Bancroft County was eliminated and its land added to Kossuth County, directly south of it. In addition, the northernmost 12 miles of Humboldt County also was added to Kossuth, making it the largest county — by land area — in the state.
