What is Entereg used for?
Alvimopan (Entereg) is an oral, peripherally-acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist used to accelerate the time to upper and lower gastrointestinal recovery following partial large or small bowel resection with primary anastomosis. Opioids used postoperatively may cause or prolong postoperative ileus.
Is Entereg a REMS drug?
Entereg is available only through a program called the Alvimopan REMS Program that restricts use to enrolled hospitals because of the potential risk of myocardial infarction with long-term use of Entereg [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1)].
What class of drug is Alvimopan?
Alvimopan is in a class of medications called peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonists. It works by protecting the bowel from the constipation effects of opioid (narcotic) medications that are used to treat pain after surgery.
Can Entereg be crushed?
Oral: Swallow capsules or tablets whole, do not chew or crush.
When do you hold entereg?
The first dose of ENTEREG was administered 30 minutes to 5 hours before the scheduled start of surgery and then twice daily until hospital discharge (or for a maximum of 7 days of postoperative treatment).
When do you stop entereg?
Keep in mind that you can only take alvimopan (Entereg) for up to 7 days (14 doses) after surgery.
Does entereg cause diarrhea?
Since ENTEREG acts peripherally, clinical signs and symptoms of increased sensitivity would be related to the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea).

- If you are allergic to this drug; any part of this drug; or any other drugs, foods, or substances.
- If you have been taking a pain drug for more than 7 days in a row.

What medications should not be taken with Entereg?
Do not take Entereg if you have used opioid medicine for more than 7 days in a row just before your intestinal surgery. Opioid medicines include codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, and many others.
What are the side effects of Entereg?
Entereg side effects. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Entereg: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Some people had heart attacks while taking Entereg long-term during clinical studies.
What are the nursing considerations for acetaminophen (paracetamol) toxicity?
There is a risk of severe liver damage. Acetaminophen/paracetamol (Tylenol) nursing considerations are divided into nursing assessment, interventions, and evaluation. Obtain detailed medical and drug related history including hypersensitivity, possible drug-drug and drug-food interactions.
