Is felting hard to learn?
It’s not the easiest craft in the world, but it’s also not the most difficult. Making basic shapes and the general needle felting technique is pretty easy to master, from my experience, but the harder steps are including smaller details and less traditional shapes.
How do I get started with felting?
In this tutorial, we’re needle felting a small ball.
- Prep Your Wool. If you’re using roving, you can just tear a piece of it off.
- Roll Your Roving Into a Ball. Make sure you tuck the ends in if you can.
- Poke the Ball. Start by placing the ball on top of your felting surface.
- Keep Going Until the Wool Felts.

What materials do you need? The very basic tools you need to begin this fiber art are some kind of wool or wool roving, felting needles, cookie cutters (for making flat shapes) and some sort of underlayment like a felting pad or a very thick sponge.

The great thing about felting, whether it be wet or needle felted is that it’s an easy craft and you don’t need a long or expensive list of equipment. As with any craft there are essential tools but the most impressive tool will be your own imagination.

Is needle felt difficult?
Needle felting is an excellent craft for people of all ages. It requires some skills, but those skills aren’t too hard to learn. The most important skill with needle felting is patience; if you can slow down your desire to finish, you can have a fun time making awesome felt creatures!

Why do my felting needles keep breaking?
