Oral Herpes Overview Oral herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus causes painful sores on your lips, gums, tongue, roof of your mouth, and inside your cheeks. It also can cause symptoms such as fever and muscle aches.
What does mouth herpes look like in the beginning?
In oral herpes, most blisters appear on the lips or mouth. They can also form elsewhere on the face, especially around the chin and below the nose, or on the tongue. At first, the sores look similar to small bumps or pimples before developing into pus-filled blisters. These may be red, yellow or white.
How long does oral herpes take to come out?
Initial herpes symptoms usually show up 2 to 20 days after you’re infected. But it may be years before the first symptoms appear. Herpes sores usually heal in a few weeks. But the virus stays in your body – and it can flare up and cause sores again.
How do you deal with oral herpes?
Treatment for the first outbreak of oral herpes in an otherwise healthy person may include:
- Acyclovir, 400 mg (milligrams) orally three times a day for 10 days or until the lesions have crusted.
- Valacyclovir, 2,000 mg orally every 12 hours for 1 day.
- Famciclovir, 250 mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days.
How long is herpes contagious?
This is usually 1–2 days before the sore becomes visible. Sores remain highly contagious until the skin completely heals. This can take up to 15 days. During an outbreak, people should be careful not to transmit the virus to others.
Can HSV-2 be passed through saliva?
Yes, you can contract oral herpes, aka cold sores, from kissing, but developing genital herpes this way is less likely. Oral herpes (HSV-1) is usually transmitted by kissing, and genital herpes (HSV-2) is most often spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

As mentioned above, you can also get genital herpes if a partner with oral herpes performs oral sex on you. You can give yourself genital herpes too, by touching a cold sore and then touching your genitals or anus.
